On this date early Wisconsin settler Willard Keyes was born. He came to the Prairie du Chien area in August of 1817. He established Crawford County's first school on May 25, 1818, but left for Illinois a year later because of the high cost of living in Prairie du Chien.
1864 - (Civil War) Battle of Boydton Plank Road, Virginia
The Battle of Boydton Plank Road, also known as the Battle of Burgess Mill or the Battle of First Hatcher's Run, entered its second day outside Petersburg, Virginia. The 2nd, 6th, 7th, 36th, 37th, and 38th Wisconsin Infantry regiments participated in this battle. Union commanders sent 30,000 troops to seize this strategic road west of the city. But after two days' fighting, they were forced to yield it back to Confederate forces.
1936 - Vice Presidential Candidate Stumps in Janesville
